Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is the 49th and current vice-president of the United States. She is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history, as being the first African American and first Asian American vice president. A member of Democratic Party, she has previously served as attorney general for California from 2011 until 2017, and also as an United States senator representing California until 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Following her first job as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Later she became the City Attorney of San Francisco. The office was named San Francisco district attorney in 2003. She was elected Attorney general of California in 2010. In 2014, she won re-election. Harris was the junior member of the United States Senate from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris beat Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election, becoming the 2nd African American woman to serve in Congress , and the only South Asian American American to be elected to the United States Senate. As Senator, Harris was a vocal advocate for healthcare, federal de-scheduling and the legalization of cannabis, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. She gained a national profile for her pointed questions of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault.
